History of the Winchester Little Theatre

Organized in 1929, the Winchester Little Theatre has a rich cultural history in the Shenandoah Valley. Established to present, produce, and encourage the acting and writing of plays, the theatre became a community hub for entertainment. While the very first production was staged at Handley High School, by 1955, the Winchester Little Theatre made its home in the old Bark Mill. Here, shows were performed in arena style (theater-in-the-round). In 1974, the Winchester Little Theatre moved once again, this time settling in at the old Pennsylvania Railroad freight station. This building dates back to 1895 and was bought by the theatre company through the ample support of friends and patrons. Shows are still held in the old train station today, adding another level of history and architecture to these cultural performances.
